Frequently Asked Questions
Grants and scholarships are financial aid that you don’t have to pay back. While scholarships can be merit or need-based, most grants are based on your specific financial circumstances. Below are scholarships and grants offered through NYU SPS. DAUS also offers scholarships for students already enrolled in its programs.
Federal financial aid, including PELL and TAP, Work-Study, and loans, may be available to help you pay for your education. Federal loans require you to file with FAFSA. Payment plans offered through the NYU Bursar are also available. Many employers offer tuition reimbursement, so if you are working, be sure to check with your HR department.
The NYU SPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies cannot guarantee that full financial need will be met. All eligible students should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.studentaid.gov using the SPS code (002785). We also encourage students to seek out additional scholarship and funding opportunities.
Students in the Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies (DAUS) at NYU SPS are not eligible for the NYU Promise Scholarship. However, we are proud to offer a multitude of scholarship opportunities for our DAUS associate and bachelor’s degree students. Learn more about financial aid and scholarships for DAUS students.
- Federal Pell Grants provide assistance to undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need according to requirements established by the federal government. To be eligible, you must enroll in a degree program and must be matriculated for your first bachelor's degree. You are automatically considered for the Pell Grant upon filing the FAFSA. Amounts can change yearly. The maximum Pell Grant award is $6,895 for the 2022–2023 award year.
- The Tuition Assistance Program is a grant awarded to residents of the state of New York who are enrolled in a full-time degree program. An annual TAP award can be up to $5,665. TAP is based on financial need, and you must file a FAFSA and a separate TAP application. If you qualify for TAP, the TAP application instructions will be included in your FAFSA results.
- Aid for Part-Time Study (APTS) is a grant program that offers New York state residents pursuing part-time undergraduate degree study awards in amounts of up to $2,000 per academic year. To be eligible, a student must have filed a FAFSA and must demonstrate financial need, must not have exhausted their TAP eligibility, must be otherwise eligible for financial aid and must be enrolled for three to 11 credit points per term.Aid for Part-Time Study (APTS) is a grant program that offers New York state residents pursuing part-time undergraduate degree study awards in amounts of up to $2,000 per academic year. To be eligible, a student must have filed a FAFSA and must demonstrate financial need, must not have exhausted their TAP eligibility, must be otherwise eligible for financial aid and must be enrolled for three to 11 credit points per term.
The NYU SPS Achieve Scholarship is awarded to 20 high-achieving incoming Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies students from community colleges each fall. The Achieve Scholarship provides a $30,000 total award ($15,000 per academic year for two years). For the best consideration, apply as soon as possible! Competitive candidates for the Achieve Scholarship should:
Complete their Associate degree at the time they join NYU SPS. Associate degrees can be in progress at the time of application but should be completed prior to enrollment at NYU SPS.
Have a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher at their community college.
This scholarship is also need-based. Applicants interested in the Achieve Scholarship should have a valid 2022–2023 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file using NYU’s school code (002785) when they apply for admission. Applicants who meet these criteria can indicate their interest in Achieve on the admissions application.
If admitted, Achieve Scholars are expected to enroll full-time and complete their bachelor’s degree in two years to maintain their scholarship.
Qualified students may be awarded up to $10,000 per academic year. These scholarships are based on financial need and academic potential and are awarded after completing the FAFSA. No additional application is necessary. You must complete the FAFSA annually to be qualified for the NYU SPS Grant and you must enroll in a minimum of six credits per semester.
The NYU School of Professional Studies Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies (NYU SPS DAUS) is proud to participate in the Community College Transfer Opportunity Program (CCTOP). This scholarship and advisement program is designed to help qualified community college students transfer to the Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies. The CCTOP scholarship at NYU SPS DAUS is set to meet 50 percent of a student's financial need up to $7,500 per academic year.
Eligibility: You may be considered for the CCTOP scholarship if you meet the following criteria.
Be a community college student at a partner school
Have earned a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA at the community college.
Have earned a minimum of 60 transferable credits toward an NYU SPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies degree program.
Complete the undergraduate admissions process, by August 1 for the fall semester and by January 1 for the spring semester; be offered admission to the NYU SPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies; and enroll in one of its programs of study.
Be a US citizen or permanent resident and eligible to complete the FAFSA form.
Be nominated by a member of the faculty or administration at your community college.
We encourage you to visit our campus and learn more about what CCTOP and NYU have to offer. We host CCTOP Visit Days several times each semester, which include a tour of campus and a transfer-specific information session. You can register yourself or as a group for one of these days through the CCTOP website.
Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) scholarships are available to new community college transfer students with a minimum 3.8 cumulative GPA. You must be able to provide a copy of your PTK certificate and your final transcript. PTK scholarships are in the amount of $2,500 per academic year and are renewable with satisfactory academic progress.
The Dean’s Scholars Program recognizes outstanding undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled and have completed at least one semester at NYU with a non-renewable scholarship of up to $10,000 (or $5,000 per semester). All degree-bearing students at NYU SPS are encouraged to apply (domestic and international). Dean’s Scholars agree to service commitments and responsibilities, such as serving as an NYU SPS peer mentor, participating in student organizations, and completing community service.

The late Leon Shimkin rose through the ranks in the elite world of New York City book publishing—starting out as a bookkeeper, he eventually became the chairman of the board and owner of Simon & Schuster. He also was one of the founders of Pocket Books. During his early career, he completed his degree at NYU by taking evening classes. Deeply committed to supporting non-traditional students in their academic pursuits, he established this scholarship fund to provide tuition assistance to newly admitted DAUS students who demonstrate academic promise and financial need. The SPS Global Diversity Scholarship is designed to help graduate students and DAUS undergraduate students from historically marginalized communities participate in SPS Global Field Intensive (GFI) courses during the J-term, spring, and summer semesters.
By creating opportunities for students who may not be otherwise able to participate in a global experience, the Global Diversity Scholarship is one effort in the broader commitment to Diversity and Inclusion at SPS. Recipients of the scholarship will receive a grant that covers the entire program activity fee for the GFI in which they are enrolled. This scholarship is only available to graduate students and DAUS undergraduates. Traditional undergraduate students are not eligible to apply.
Federal student loan programs offer low-interest student loan options for US citizens and permanent residents. Federal loan options for undergraduate students include:

You must first file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using NYU’s school code (002785). More information about these loan programs including loan amounts, interest rates, and repayment plans can be found here.
A variety of additional, private (non-federal) alternative loans are also available from lending institutions. Please think carefully about your obligations as a borrower prior to pursuing any educational loan. Consider your educational investment at NYU, as well as your long-term financial commitments when borrowing.

External scholarships can be found through websites that compile this information including Foundation Center, Institute of International Education, International Education Financial Aid, Peterson's Education Center, and Education USA.
Active-duty members of the military and their family members qualify for a range of military benefits and additional financial aid and scholarships. If you are in the military now, your unit may pay for your tuition if you attend college in your off-duty time. Tuition assistance for military spouses and other family members is also available.

Military veterans and their family members qualify for a range of military benefits and additional financial aid and scholarships. NYU SPS is a proud participant in the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, which provides scholarship assistance from the University and the US Department of Veterans Affairs. NYU SPS currently provides a $10,000 Yellow Ribbon award which is matched by the VA for an annual award total of $20,000.
To qualify for the Yellow Ribbon Enhancement, you must apply to the VA. The VA will determine your eligibility for the Post-9/11 GI Bill and issue you a Certificate of Eligibility. You may then contact the VA Certifications Team at certifications@nyu.edu. We appreciate your service!
