Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Online Master’s Degree Basics

It varies by degree program and school. Some schools offer 100% online courses while others offer a blend of asynchronous and/or synchronous online learning combined with live, engaging on-campus courses.

Our online master’s programs are taught by the same distinguished professors as our on-site master’s degree programs. Online students enjoy the flexibility of being able to study from anywhere in the world and form close friendships with their classmates. All of our programs offer structured weekly assignments and activities with opportunities for live, online interaction with faculty and peers. Some programs have more live online sessions than others, and a few require short in-person residency periods.

Many of our online programs also have options to study 100% on-site or to take a mix of online and on-site classes. See each program description for details.

The time commitment for completion of an online master’s program at NYU SPS typically varies based on the program, course load, and individual study habits. Students can generally expect to spend around 15 to 20 hours per week, per course. This includes attending live online sessions with faculty and/or students, completing assignments, participating in discussions, and studying.

For part-time students taking one or two courses per term, this could mean 15 to 40 hours of instruction per week. Full-time students, with a heavier course load, could expect their weekly time commitment to be significantly higher.

It’s always a good idea to check specific program details for a more accurate estimate, as time requirements may differ based on program rigor and structure.

Yes, online master’s degrees are respected, especially when they’re earned from accredited and reputable institutions, such as NYU SPS. The perception of online degrees has significantly improved over the years as more top universities offer online programs that maintain the same academic standards as their on-campus counterparts.

Key factors that contribute to the respectability of pursuing an online degree include:

  • Accreditation: Degrees from accredited institutions are widely recognized and respected. Accreditation ensures that the program and university or college meet specific quality standards.
  • Institution Reputation: Degrees from well-known and highly ranked universities tend to carry more weight, regardless of whether they are earned online or in person.
  • Program Quality: Programs that offer rigorous coursework, experienced professors, and interactive learning environments are seen as credible.
  • Industry Recognition: If the industry in which you work or plan to work values online education, it enhances the degree's respectability within that industry. Fields like business, technology, human resources, marketing, and healthcare often view online graduate programs and education positively.
  • Hybrid Learning and Networking Opportunities: Programs that incorporate in-person elements, such as residencies or networking events, can further enhance the perceived value of an online degree program.
  • Employer Familiarity: As more professionals advance their careers with online degrees, employers are increasingly familiar with and accepting of these credentials.
