However, it wasn't until he transitioned to civilian life and embarked on a study abroad trip to Guatemala that he discovered his calling. While learning about the 30 years of violence and genocide in Guatemala, Pedro connected with the struggles of the Indigenous Mayan communities. This experience stirred a passion within him to engage in humanitarian work.

After his initial trip, Pedro returned to Guatemala on his own, immersing himself in the local culture and history to understand how he could best support underprivileged families there. He utilized his skills as a medic and social worker to provide aid, but soon realized that communication was the key to bridging cultural gaps and offering effective support. As his efforts gained recognition, he found himself leading a team of US volunteers, using his language skills to facilitate the experience. "[It] taught me the power of language in fostering trust, building relationships, and ensuring that people's needs were truly understood," he shares.
