This spring, the NYU School of Professional Studies (NYU SPS) is excited to welcome Patrick Gray as an instructor for the Technical Writing elective in our MS in Professional Writing program. Patrick joins us from Google, where he plays a pivotal role as a senior technical writer within the internal developer relations team. His extensive background spans various capacities in the software industry, from leading writing teams at large enterprises to pioneering efforts in startups.

We sat down with Gray to chat more about his technical writing background and what he's looking forward to as a professor at NYU SPS.

From Biology Student to Technical Writer

Gray's career is distinguished by his versatile experience in creating a broad spectrum of documentation. His work ranges from user-centric manuals to in-depth developer documentation and his past role in managing writing teams and operating a consulting business provided him a comprehensive insight into the technical communication field and the necessity to be able to address diverse user needs.

With a Master of Science in Technical Writing from Northeastern University and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Case Western Reserve University, Patrick brings a wealth of knowledge and a unique interdisciplinary perspective to our program. His academic and professional journey embodies the NYU SPS commitment to integrating practical expertise with academic excellence, preparing our students to excel in dynamic and challenging environments.

Chasing a Passion

Pursuing technical writing marked a career shift for Gray, who transitioned from several years in laboratory environments to discovering his passion for technical communication. He shares, "I really enjoyed developing and editing SOPs and training material—it made me realize my passion for communication and training."

Motivated by the work-life balance, growth potential, and compensation that the field offers, Gray successfully secured his first full-time role as a technical writer while completing his Master's degree.

Since making this career shift, Gray isn't looking back. According to him, the technical writing field is becoming more interesting as it continues to grow.

With the advent of new large language models (content generating AI), I think the technical writing field is growing and changing faster than ever before. There is a ton of opportunity to use and develop AI tools that assist in writing, editing, or even summarizing human-written content."

When Gray started his technical writing career, he quickly learned that being a good listener and interviewer was just as crucial as having strong writing skills. In a profession that involves synthesizing highly complex information from subject matter experts for a specific audience, understanding how people interact with the material is key.

Optimism for the Future

Current and future MS in Professional Writing students who are eager to explore the dynamic world of technical writing should consider taking Technical Writing for the Information Professions with Gray, who is looking forward to sharing his industry knowledge in the classroom. He finds his interaction with junior technical writing refreshing and interesting because those who are new to the profession tend to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the table.

"I look forward to seeing the profession through the eyes of the MSPW students, and hearing their stories and ideas about the future. Helping to guide students through a writing degree and watching them get established as technical writers will be highly rewarding for me!"

Gray is also excited to share his love of mechanical keyboards and serif fonts with his students. Pursuing an MS in Professional Writing means you could have the opportunity to take Gray's Technical Writing for the Information Professions elective.
