<p><span class="p-body">Drawing students from all over the world, the MS in Translation and Interpreting program at NYU SPS is led by experts in the field like Yasmin Alkashef, who is an ATA-certified Arabic translator, a court-certified interpreter and a credentialed healthcare interpreter. We recently spoke with Alkashef to learn more about her background and teaching experience, plus her advice for incoming students.</span></p>

<p><span class="p-body">Alkashef's journey into the world of translation and interpreting began in Cairo, Egypt, where her passion for languages shaped her academic goals. Armed with an MA in Translation Studies and a PhD in Interpreting Studies from Ain Shams University, Alkashef has established herself as a leader in the field. Her experience as an ATA-certified Arabic-English translator and court interpreter is what led her to NYU SPS, where she now teaches in the MS in Translation and Interpreting program. &quot;A colleague recommended me when she heard they were looking for someone to teach the Principles of Interpreting course, and the rest is history,&quot; she reflects.</span></p> <p><span class="p-body">Teaching was a natural transition for Alkashef. Having taught translation at Ain Shams University, she discovered the joy of guiding students through their first steps in the field. &quot;It's always a pleasure to introduce students to what soon becomes a lifelong passion and not just a profession,&quot; she says. Watching her students grow and navigate their initial challenges has been a rewarding experience that keeps her motivated.</span></p>

<p><span class="p-body">Alkashef's teaching style is interactive and focuses on the exchange of ideas. She values the diverse backgrounds and languages her students bring into the classroom. &quot;I learn so much from my students especially that they all come from different backgrounds and speak different languages,&quot; she explains. Her goal is to create an engaging learning environment where students feel comfortable exploring their skills. One of her favorite moments is watching students gain confidence as they record themselves interpreting for the first time.</span></p> <p><span class="p-body">However, teaching online presents its own set of challenges. Alkashef admits that it can sometimes be difficult to foster a strong sense of community in the fully online format of the program. To counter this, she incorporates group work, guided discussions, and optional class meetings to create an interactive classroom. For her, the biggest success comes from seeing her students thrive in their careers. &quot;The success is in watching students leading successful careers in the translation and interpreting industry. I am always happy to hear about their updates from LinkedIn.&quot;</span></p>

<p><span class="p-body">Alkashef believes that success in the field requires dedication and time. Her advice to current students is practical: &quot;Do not try to squeeze all the work you need to do for class into a couple of hours each week. Create several slots in your calendar each week for your coursework.&quot;</span></p>

<p><span class="p-body">With the constant evolution of technology, Alkashef knows the key to staying ahead is adaptability. &quot;The industry landscape is always changing,&quot; she says. &quot;Those who thrive will be the ones who adapt to advancements and integrate them into their workflow.&quot;</span></p> <p><span class="p-body">Looking forward, Alkashef is excited to continue working with her students at NYU SPS. &quot;It's been a privilege to be part of their journey.
