<p><span class="p-body">Center for Publishing, Writing, and Media alum Eva N.S. Boatwright earned a bachelor's degree in French and Communication Studies from the State University of New York at Oswego in 2011. She was a project manager in the language industry and freelance interpreter before she decided to attain an <a href="/content/sps-nyu/explore/degrees-and-programs/ms-in-translation.html" title="Master's of Science in Translation and Interpreting">MS in Translation & Interpreting</a> from SPS in Fall 2019.</span></p>
A Pivotal Course Leads to New Horizon
<p><span class="p-body">Boatwright's favorite class at PWM was Literary Translation, taught by Jenny McPhee. "My favorite discussions and readings happened in that class. It also set me on the path to becoming a literary translator—that wasn't an area of expertise I had really considered before," she shared. She also highly enjoyed Audio Translation with Ana Lis Salotti. "That course illuminated many facets of the translation industry I didn't know much about."</span></p>
Invaluable Mentors and Industry Contacts
<p><span class="p-body">When asked which faculty had the biggest impact on her education, Boatwright was happy to list multiple instructors. "Sandra Smith was my instructor for Contrastive Stylistics. She was also my thesis advisor," she recalled. "Since graduating, she has continued to be a mentor to me and an incredible industry contact to have." </span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">"I have to give credit to Jenny McPhee too, since her course introduced me to the world of literary translation in such an inspirational way. She has also been an invaluable contact!" Boatwright also listed Academic Director Annelise Finegan was a great source of mentorship and support. "I cannot sing her praises enough!" she exclaimed.</span></p>
Advice from an Alum: Be Proactive
<p><span class="p-body">Boatwright believes new and prospective students in the Translation and Interpreting program should take advantage of every opportunity offered through NYU SPS. "It will be a lot of hard work, but the payoff will be worth it," she shared. </span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">Another piece of advice? Before applying, attend an informational webinar. "I did that before I applied, and it answered questions I may have otherwise been too intimidated to ask," she explained. "You may also recognize some names or faces once you begin classes, which helps break the ice!"</span></p>
Practical Skills, Lifelong Pride
<p><span class="p-body">"I fully believe I wouldn't be where I am professionally without the MS in Translation & Interpreting, nor would I have the clear vision I now do for my future professional endeavors," said Boatwright. "This program gave me the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed. Making it through the program also instilled in me a self-confidence that I didn't have before. Even as a fully virtual student, my Violet pride runs deep!"</span></p>
