Siriluck Mim Rattanawaropas' academic and personal journey demonstrates how passion, mindset, and a solid foundation built both in the classroom and through hands-on experience can take you far. For Siriluck, that has meant working on the floor at the UNESCO General Assembly and for an international consulate.

Since graduating from the MS in Public Relations and Corporate Communication from the NYU School of Professional Studies in 2017, Rattanawaropas has turned her passion for media and communications into a fulfilling academic and professional career. Here's what Siriluck had to say about her interests and her time at NYU SPS.

From Creating Content to Communications

A Bangkok native, Rattanawaropas has always been captivated by the power of media to convey and connect. Having worked as a news anchor and a TV personality for Thailand's National TV Channel for ten years, Rattanawaropas decided to further pursue her passions and moved to New York to get a Master's degree at NYU SPS. "I was particularly interested in the Public Relations and Corporate Communication program due to its dynamic nature and the critical role it plays in shaping public perception and managing communications in various sectors," she explains.

The decision to pursue communications and public relations at NYU SPS is in part driven by Rattanawaropas's experiences in media both in Thailand and the United States, which highlight the importance of communications and the utility of exchange, particularly in building and strengthening community. Along with NYU's reputation, the Public Relations and Corporate Communication dynamic curriculum and NYU's prime location in New York City provided unmatched opportunities for personal and professional growth. She says, "The hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to engage with the NYU community have been instrumental in my professional development."

A Higher Education

Rattanawaropas's time at NYU was transformative, marked by academic excellence and active community involvement. She fully immersed herself in the NYU community and built lasting friendships with classmates worldwide, serving as a student ambassador and as a panelist and speaker, sharing her experiences at NYU SPS for prospective and international students as well as receiving leadership and community awards. She emphasizes the strong connections with mentors such as Stephanie Mattera and Helio Fred Garcia, who she is still in contact with today.

Academic achievements aren't the only takeaway of her time at NYU SPS. The ability to put into practice and apply practical insights is a major highlight and invaluable part of her experience in the program.

I participated in various hands-on learning experiences during my time at NYU SPS. I took a Practicum class with Professor Mattera, and my Capstone project focused on how Thai Government Agencies handle internal communication during crises. These experiences were both practical and useful, providing me with practical knowledge and skills that have been directly applicable to my career. They emphasized the importance of applying theoretical knowledge in real-world situations and helped me develop a comprehensive understanding of the field."
Rattanawaropas's Impressive Professional Journey

Through hard work, passion, and an optimistic attitude, Siriluck now works as a Communication Strategist and Public Affairs Officer at the Royal Thai Consulate in New York, where she manages PR plans, media relations, and cultural events across ten states. "My time at NYU SPS provided me with a solid foundation in communication strategies and public relations, which has been invaluable in my current role," she says. It's also been crucial to her professional success, which not only includes securing her role but also receiving the "Outstanding Civil Servant" award from the Royal Thai Public Relations Department Office of the Prime Minister in 2020.

The mentorship, curriculum, and opportunities to apply learned material have helped Rattanawaropas develop crucial skills and navigate professional challenges, such as managing national crisis communication during the COVID-19 pandemic, which tested her resilience and highlighted the importance of effective communication. "It's crucial to have a well-thought-out crisis communication plan in place and to be able to adapt quickly as situations evolve," she says, "Professor Garcia's crisis communication class significantly prepared me to effectively handle real crisis situations at work."

Community is Key

We asked Rattanawaropas what would say to the incoming first year class: "Engage with the community, participate in events, and seek out mentorship opportunities. One thing I wish I had known earlier is the importance of building a strong professional network from the start. These connections can be invaluable throughout your career."

She also encourages students to take full advantage of the opportunities and resources made available, both within the program and in the city. "Enjoy and make the most out of living in the city. There are different activities for you to look forward to in every season, making the experience even more enriching and exciting," she says.

Her experiences at NYU SPS and beyond have prepared her to thrive in the field of communications and public relations and beyond. Whether it's working towards advancing her career in public relations and communications, mentoring Thai and international students in New York, or sharing her culinary adventures and tours of NYC's food scene to her 11,000 followers on Facebook Reels, we are so excited to see what Siriluck is up to next.
