What product or service does Rural Tourism Network offer?

Rural Tourism Network fosters the creation of collaborative networks for rural tourism providers, serving as a platform where community and engagement drive the growth of tourism within rural areas. RTN enables tourism providers to connect, share insights, and work together to enhance visitor experiences that highlight the unique character of their communities. By encouraging collaboration and knowledge-sharing, local businesses can reach broader audiences and create impactful, sustainable tourism. More than just offering tools, RTN builds a community that strengthens each member through mutual support, helping to elevate rural tourism as a collective force that contributes to the vitality of these areas.

How did you come up with the idea for this business?

After living and working internationally for several years, I spent the pandemic teaching in a rural community in North Carolina. That experience, coupled with my own childhood in a small Pennsylvania town, rekindled my deep appreciation for rural life. At this time, I also recognized that the economic and cultural divide between urban and non-urban areas was intensifying. Rural communities continue to struggle to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world, which often leads to dwindling populations and fewer economic opportunities.

This realization motivated me to pursue a master’s degree in Travel and Tourism Management from NYU Tisch Center for Hospitality, with the goal of supporting rural communities in leveraging tourism to build economic resilience and cultural preservation. Founding Rural Tourism Network is a step toward that vision.

Why did you decide to participate in the HI Hub Incubator program?

I recognize the transformative power of mentorship and know that having access to experienced guidance can significantly impact my career and the future of my business. The HI Hub Incubator provides a unique opportunity to gain insights from industry leaders, refine my vision for Rural Tourism Network, and strategically develop my entrepreneurial skills. I believe this mentorship will not only support my growth as a founder but also help me create a more sustainable, impactful business.

What do you enjoy most about creating your own startup business?

Creating Rural Tourism Network allows me to bring a vision to life that truly reflects my passion for rural communities and their economic growth. I find deep satisfaction in crafting solutions that can have a tangible impact, and I’m motivated by the ability to shape each element of the business to serve a meaningful purpose. The freedom to innovate and make strategic decisions based on what will genuinely benefit these communities is incredibly rewarding.

What advice would you give to someone contemplating founding a startup?

Starting a business is a leap into the unknown for me, and I’ve found that being open to learning is crucial. It’s okay not to have all the answers—just focus on growing step by step and don’t be too hard on yourself.

What is something you learned through this process that you wish you’d known before you created your startup?

I wish I had known just how vital networking would be. Building connections with others in the industry can open doors to opportunities and insights that can really help you grow your startup.

What does the future of your startup look like in an ideal world?

In an ideal world, the future of Rural Tourism Network looks like a vibrant, interconnected community of rural tourism providers working together to promote their unique offerings. Each member would have access to resources and support that enable them to thrive, leading to increased economic opportunities and a renewed appreciation for the culture and heritage of rural America.

Have you worked with any alumni or mentors on this project? If so, who and what was that experience like?

Yes, I have the privilege of working with an amazing team of mentors from the NYU HI Hub Incubator: Gene Quinn, John Williams, Asi Ginio, David Millili, and Eddie Bergman. Collaborating with them has been an incredible experience; they’ve provided practical advice and helped me refine my business approach, giving me a deeper understanding of the startup landscape.
