Writing Narrative Nonfiction

Writing Narrative Nonfiction combines the storytelling techniques of fiction and poetry with the truth telling of journalism and critical reflection. This 10-week course is open to writers of all backgrounds with no previous experience required.
Taught by Susan Shapiro, an author who has freelanced for The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Newsweek, Salon, Slate, The Atlantic, LitHub, and Esquire, this class offers insight into what editors are publishing now and how to break in.
Students will read and write a range of contemporary nonfiction forms including personal essays, regional stories, opinion and cultural commentary, humor, book criticism, author profiles, Q and As, and pitch letters. Assignments are designed to build toward a polished submission ready piece.
A guest speaker, either a top editor or a recent graduate who has successfully published, will share their experiences and answer questions. Whether you are looking to build a writing portfolio, get published, or simply explore the genre this course will meet you where you are.
