As a result of moving frequently between cities and schools, she developed a deep connection to books and the literary communities surrounding them. "I'm a book lover with a love for everything literary!" she exclaims. Brooke's interests extend beyond literature; she enjoys swimming, kayaking, and diving into pop culture.</span></p>

A Journalist Steps into the Heart of Publishing
<p><span class="p-body">Brooke's professional career began in journalism. She worked as a multimedia journalist in Toronto, covering various topics like entertainment, relationships, food, and daily news. However, in her mid-20s, she decided to make a bold career shift, setting her sights on New York City to break into the publishing scene. She chose NYU for its prestigious faculty and its location at the heart of the global publishing industry.</span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">Being an NYU student provided Brooke with ample opportunities to connect within her field. "NYU is a great immersive, hands-on experience that has allowed me to make connections within my field, network with industry icons, and build meaningful friendships," she says. Through the program, Brooke has volunteered for industry events and secured internships at a Big Five publisher. The professors, who are also working professionals in the industry, have played a crucial role in her journey. "They are kind, warm, and willing to help you launch your career," she shares.</span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">While she's just beginning her capstone project, Brooke has already experienced how valuable NYU's hands-on approach can be. Her education has covered the essential building blocks of publishing, from finance and marketing to publicity and editorial. She emphasizes how the program ensures students understand the business side of selling books, which is critical in a rapidly evolving industry.</span></p>
Mentorship and Industry Connections
<p><span class="p-body">Throughout her time at NYU, Brooke has been inspired by several mentors who have shaped her path. Tavia Kowalchuk, her marketing professor, played a role in steering Brooke toward a career in marketing by generously sharing her time and expertise. Lauren Ortiz, a publicist at Little, Brown, and Company, introduced her to the real world of publicity during her internship, going above and beyond as a mentor. Brooke fondly mentions the Little, Brown, and Company team, expressing her gratitude for the insights and guidance they provided, which solidified her passion for publishing.</span></p>
<p><span class="p-body">"People in publishing are some of the brightest and most empathetic people," Brooke notes. She appreciates the generosity of those she has met, all of whom remember the challenges of securing their first job and are willing to share advice and expertise.</span></p>
Looking Ahead to a Career in Marketing or Editorial
<p><span class="p-body">As Brooke nears the end of her time at NYU, she hopes to build a career in marketing or editorial. "I love telling stories and it would be a dream to help shape and launch books into the world," she says. Her education at NYU and the knowledge and skills she has gained from her professors, have prepared her to stay ahead of the curve in the publishing industry. </span></p>

There are so many incredible networking opportunities," she advises. For Brooke, these relationships and experiences have been invaluable, and she urges others to embrace every moment. "It goes by fast!" she adds, reminding new students to fully immerse themselves in the environment.</span></p>
