Current NYU student Surabhi Achar's passions and interests span a wide range, from art and design to animals and sports. She finds joy in expressing her creativity through various artistic mediums, and she has a deep appreciation for nature and its imperfections. She's also particularly drawn to activities like climbing, basketball, and any outdoor adventure that get her adrenaline pumping. Her diverse set of interests ultimately led her to NYU, where she could pursue other areas of joy and inspiration.

A Reputation for Excellence

"I chose to come to NYU SPS because of its reputation for excellence in the field of project management and its vibrant community of diverse students and faculty," Achar explains. She also feels that "the location in the heart of New York City provides endless opportunities for networking and professional growth.”

She specifically chose the MS in Project Management program because, despite being trained as an architect, she realized that her true passion is the process of bringing projects to life rather than just the design aspect. "While I enjoyed the creative aspects of architecture, I discovered that managing the entire project lifecycle, from planning and execution to completion, gave me more satisfaction," she shares. "This realization led me to consider a career change into project management, where I could apply my organizational skills, attention to detail, and desire to deliver successful results."

According to Achar, effective project management is essential in any industry. She wanted to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to lead successful projects and teams, and knew that NYU SPS would provide her with the resources to achieve that goal.

Rigor and Practicality, Beyond the Classroom

Achar's academic experience has been incredibly rewarding. She describes NYU’s curriculum as rigorous and practical, and the faculty members as highly knowledgeable and supportive. "I've also enjoyed the extracurricular activities and networking events organized by SPS, which have enhanced my overall learning experience," she reveals. For example, she serves as the PR manager for the NYU Sports Film Festival, which was created to showcase and celebrate the powerful intersection of sports and film.

"The festival is student-run and co-produced by the NYU Production Lab, NYU Athletics, and the NYU Tisch Institute of Global Sport, with official support from NYU Tisch Undergraduate Film & Television and SNY," explains Achar. "This year, we're excited to announce the opening of submissions with two new categories: a Pitch contest exclusive to NYU students and an action sports category sponsored by Red Bull."

Achar feels privileged to be part of a talented Sports Film Festival team, led by Director Allegra Saltzman. Her involvement includes coordinating logistics, managing communications, and facilitating partnerships with industry stakeholders.

"We're dedicated to providing an unforgettable experience for both attendees and participants, and we are excited to highlight the incredible talent and creativity of the sports film community," she muses. "It's been a rewarding experience to contribute to such a dynamic and impactful event, and I'm excited to see it grow in the future."

Bringing It All Together in the Future

Looking ahead, Achar's immediate plans for after NYU are to pursue a career as a project manager in an industry such as sports, design, healthcare, or manufacturing. "I'm excited about the prospect of applying my skills and expertise to drive successful projects and contribute to organizational growth," she concludes. "In the long term, my ultimate goal is to find a professional environment that fosters passion, creativity, and collaboration, where I can continue to learn and grow alongside like-minded individuals.
