<p>Since Fortino's undergrad days as an engineering student, he has always been fascinated by computers and emerging technologies. At the time, his focus was on numerical methods, which we now know as data science. He was among the first to integrate generative AI into his courses, recognizing early on the potential it had to transform learning. &quot;Once [AI] came out a year and a half ago, I really jumped right in,&quot; he explains. He illustrates this by integrating AI in project management, where students use generative models like ChatGPT to develop applications that serve real-world needs, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.</p> <p>His approach fosters creativity, urging students to direct AI tools in crafting solutions that are technically proficient and rich in emotional and intellectual depth. &quot;The creativity isn't in the AI; it's in the person using it,&quot; he clarifies. By guiding students to use AI in enhancing their creative outputs, Fortino ensures they can excel in their capacity to innovate and think critically. &quot;We're not just teaching them to use technology; we're preparing them to lead with it,&quot; he adds.</p>

<p>Tangible success is a key ingredient to Professor Fortino's favorite teaching moments, like graduations and project completions that show the impact of education. &quot;Graduation is my favorite event because that means we've done our job. We're kicking them off the nest, and they're prepared for the world as professionals,&quot; he proudly states.
