Teaching Highlights from NYU SPS

Teaching Quantitative Methods and Metrics for Decision-Making has been both challenging and rewarding for Diabes. While students often start the course apprehensive about statistics, many grow to engage with and even love the subject.

"My greatest moments of joy from teaching at SPS so far have come from students' sharing how they went from avoiding to seeking out new knowledge in quantitative methods and statistics. To see the fear of something, like statistics, change to curiosity is intrinsically rewarding."

Diabes believes understanding the importance of data collection, analysis, and interpretation is crucial in today's data-driven world. "Some have called this the 'post-truth era'; I like to think that courses like Quantitative Methods fight this and stand as evidence to the contrary," he asserts.

A Word of Advice for Post-grad Professionals

Diabes advises current students to embrace continuous learning. "Your learning did not stop upon degree conferral; rather, it marked the beginning of your learning with the new foundation provided by your education at NYU," he emphasizes. He encourages graduates to adopt lifelong learning as a key component of their professional careers.

According to Diabes, leaders in the field should connect widely and engage with diverse thinkers to stay ahead of technological advancements. "Research shows that broad-reaching networks help fuel innovation; it is difficult if not impossible to keep up with innovation in a small echo chamber," he explains.

Balancing work, learning, and personal well-being can be challenging for graduate students in an academically rigorous program like this one. "Always take time to step back from what you are doing to consider things broadly, in terms of your life holistically. Make every single day worth living," he advises prospective students.
