NYU SPS Students: True Global Citizens with Real World Experience

His mentor, Dr. Joseph Cox introduced him to life as an academic during his time as an undergraduate at Miami University. "As I reflect on my experiences with students over the past 20 years, I'm proud of their success and the role I've played in guiding them in their respective journeys to finding their dream careers," he muses.

Kelly is proud that NYU SPS students are true global citizens and not only have real world experiences in NYC, but have been fortunate to travel the world to amazing places like:

Barcelona (Spain)

Madrid (Spain)

Dortmund (Germany)

Doha (Qatar)

Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates)

Tokyo (Japan)

Mumbai (India)

New Delhi (India)

Buenos Aires (Argentina)

Belo Horizonte (Brazil)

Toronto (Canada)

London (United Kingdom)

He hopes that these experiences will open the world to the students and show them the possibilities of a career as a global sport professional.

"Graduates of the Tisch Institute are able to bring a toolkit of skills and expertise to the business workplace that will allow them to compete at a high level as they seek to achieve their respective goals," he shares.

The Ultimate Differentiator: A Global Mindset

Kelly believes that having a global mindset is the ultimate differentiator. For instance, during his dozen-plus visits to Qatar as part of the Josoor Institute's Football and Sports Management diploma program, he has been fortunate to see the country transform its global footprint into an international hub for sporting excellence.

“Attending the 2022 FIFA World Cup in person changed my life for the better and provided many opportunities for personal reflection on my 10-years' worth of experiences”

"The fact that I have friends, colleagues, former students, and business associates in Doha is a testament to my experiences in the country and the role my travels to Qatar have played in not only my professional career but my personal life,” he continued. “I am excited about the future of the country of Qatar and can't wait for my next visit."

On Empathy and Curiosity in the Global Sport Industry

Focusing on developing empathy is one piece of advice he would give students as they matriculate into the global sport industry. Issues like racial injustice, gun violence, gender inequality, and geopolitical differences could all be remedied by improved levels of thoughtfulness and care for all human beings. "My belief in bringing empathy to my work as an educator has been a motivating factor for my foundation as a global sport professional," asserted Kelly.

Furthermore, Kelly believes that curiosity is the key to students embracing technology and the ever-evolving changes that are a part of the business world. "Consistency [in] embracing technology is the value-add that will allow students to remain up-to-date and relevant in their respective fields," he concluded.

A New Chapter as Associate Dean

Earlier this year, Dr. Kelly stepped into his new role as associate dean at the Tisch Institute for Global Sport and couldn't be more excited. He shares, "[This] is a proud moment for me and my family. Especially with love and support from my wife, Melanie, and son, Xavier, as my foundation, I can bring a servant-leader mindset to the role as I seek to support our students, faculty, staff, and alumni."

Along with sharing his enthusiasm, he is looking forward to bringing his vision to life in his new role. That vision includes building an ecosystem focused on internship and career support, study-away and international experiences, industry engagement and career mentors, and applied research.
