Taking a Leap

Originally from Long Island, John grew up in a sports-focused family. His father’s collegiate hockey career at Harvard inspired John to follow a similar path, and he went on to attend Harvard, where he majored in government and played lacrosse. Though he enjoyed his undergraduate experience, he couldn’t shake the itch to follow his passion for sports.

While his initial career led him to finance—specifically investment banking and corporate bond trading—John was ready to make a transition. His experiences in the financial world highlighted the influence of money in society. Still, he felt unfulfilled so he began seeking opportunities that would align his career with his true interests. “I’ve always been a nerd, so I figured formal education was never a bad thing,” John says, reflecting on his decision to return to school. NYU’s MS in Global Sport program quickly became his top choice due to its esteemed faculty and hands-on curriculum. The chance to learn from leading industry professionals sealed the deal.

John’s time at NYU struck a balance between in-classroom learning and real-world networking. While the pandemic forced a mix of in-person and virtual learning, he found value in both settings and leveraged NYU’s extensive network to meet industry leaders and build meaningful connections. “A lot of valuable lessons I’ve learned that I apply day-to-day in my job were learned outside the classroom,” he notes, emphasizing the importance of networking and real-world experiences.

Stepping Into a New Era of Soccer

After completing his MS in Global Sport, John found his place in Major League Soccer, working in the brand alliances department. His day-to-day role involves helping brands leverage soccer to amplify their products and services through genuine partnerships. Reflecting on his time at NYU, John credits the program for equipping him with the tools to succeed.

NYU exposed me to various elements I use today, from digital marketing tactics to understanding contractual obligations and client relationship management.”

John also recognizes the strategic foresight that led him to choose soccer as his industry. While other major sports leagues in the United States like the NFL and NBA are well-established, he saw the potential for growth in soccer, especially with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon. His ambition is to help make soccer a dominant force in North America, similar to its standing internationally.

A Word of Advice

John encourages current and prospective students to take risks and follow their passions. “Taking risks, even when I had a comfy finance job, was crucial for me, and it positioned me for success,” he says.

His advice is to stay persistent, especially when networking or seeking new opportunities, noting that persistence often opens doors that may not seem accessible at first.Today, John is proud to contribute to the growing popularity of soccer in North America.
