Suhail Y Tayeb, director of the Center for the Sustainable Built Environment at the NYU SPS Schack Institute of Real Estate, recently appeared on the Sustainability Street podcast to discuss how risk management strategy is critical to responsible development as data centers continue to pop up around the country and the globe.

Such projects have captured headlines, receiving backlash from communities and environmentalists over their inordinate consumption of land, power, and water. Tayeb posits that the reality is not so cut-and-dried, noting that well-planned digital infrastructure projects have gotten lumped in with poorly sited and poorly communicated ones.

“Talking to people, letting them know what’s going to happen, what are the effects, what are the impacts,” Tayeb shares. “That’s what determines whether these projects are responsible or disruptive.”

Tayeb, a clinical assistant professor at the NYU SPS Schack Institute of Real Estate, is also a lead instructor for the new MS in Sustainability & Global Practice, a Center for Global Affairs and Schack Institute cross-program and cross-industry degree.

On the podcast, Tayeb discusses how this new interdisciplinary master’s program will help students better understand and think about building infrastructure as a complete system rather than isolated silos.
