Credit for Prior Learning from DAUS

DAUS allows students to bring a maximum of 80 credits into a bachelor’s degree and 30 into an associate’s degree.

• Credits earned at other accredited colleges and universities
• Credits earned through examinations like language testing, advanced placement (AP), international baccalaureate (IB), and College-level Examination Program (CLEP) outcomes, in addition to other worldwide recognized examinations.
• Participation in registered apprenticeship programs through an employer.
• Experiential credit earned through an assessment of skills obtained from previous work experience 
• Credits earned through approved professional credentials like certificates and bootcamps
• Credits earned through military service

NOTE: There are no maximum credits awarded for prior learning in any single area of knowledge.

Once you are enrolled, your adviser can help you apply for credit for prior learning. There are 3 main ways to do this.

• Proof of Credential
  • Transfer Credit: Students can earn credit by presenting a college transcript for any courses taken at other accredited academic institutions. Students must earn a C or higher in the course and final transcripts must be submitted in order for credit to be assessed by an academic advisor and awarded.
  • Bootcamps or Certificate Programs: Earn credit for prior learning through approved professional certifications. This allows individuals to accelerate their academic progress by receiving credit for relevant, college-level knowledge gained through industry-recognized credentials. Official Credentials must be submitted to academic advisors for credit to be assessed and awarded.
  • Participation in a registered apprenticeship program: Currently, the Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies (DAUS) offers credit toward the Associate's Degree in Hospitality Management through a partnership with the American Hotel and Lodging Association.
• Proof of Exam Results 
  • Students can submit official results for advanced placement (AP), international baccalaureate (IB), and other worldwide recognized examinations.
  • AP Exams: Students may receive college credit toward their degree for test results of 5 or 4, depending on the subject examination. Credit can be awarded in liberal arts subjects that correspond to the disciplines taught at SPS, and some AP exams count as equivalents of specific courses and are approved to count toward major program requirements. Others can be awarded as elective credit that students can count toward degree requirements. Official reports must be submitted for review and for credit to be awarded.
  • IB Exams: DAUS recognizes, for advanced standing credit, higher-level (HL) examinations passed with grades of 6 or 7. No credit is granted for standard-level (SL) examinations. Official reports must be submitted for review and for credit to be awarded.
  • CLEP Exams: While enrolled in a DAUS program, students have the option to complete a CLEP exam to satisfy a required course in their degree programs. Students can receive credits for the following CLEP exams. CLEP exams must be pre-approved by an academic advisor and official reports must be submitted for review and for credit to be awarded after the CLEP exam is completed.
• Portfolio
  • Students can also earn credit through assessment of prior learning through work and other professional experiences. To begin this process, students must submit a resume and brief description of professional experiences. Students will work closely with an advisor and faculty members to assess skills from their professional experiences, and map them to courses in their degrees. Students will prepare a final portfolio which must be approved by a faculty member for credit to be awarded.
